GAUTIER — The first round of the Singing River Classic on the basketball court went the same way the recent meeting on the football field did. Pascagoula thumped Gautier 78-57 Friday night as both teams resumed Region 4-6A play. The win was the 32nd straight in region play for the Panthers, who now stand 14-6 overall and 4-0 in league play. The Gators, who moved up from Class 5A to Class 6A this season, drop to 10-10 overall and are 2-2 in the region race.

Pascagoula placed a quartet of players in double digits in the winning effort. Marcus Cooper dropped in a game-high 19 points, while Blake Nettles and Adam Griffin each chipped in 13 points apiece for PHS. Jacob Griffin added 11 points. It was a big night for the senior standout Dandy Dozen product Nettles, as his 13 points pushed him over the 1,000 career points scored mark at PHS. Cooper registered eight points in the first quarter, and Adam Griffin added five points in the same period, including a 3-pointer, as Pascagoula jumped out to a quick and commanding 25-11 lead after the opening frame and never looked back.

C.J. Weiss led Gautier with 17 points, while Kasin Thomas had 16 points for the Gators, including four treys. Evan Smith added 10 points for GHS. The outcome was quite reminiscent of the 49-12 win by Pascagoula on the football field in the annual meeting between the two arch-rivals a little over two months ago.
