Prep Basketball: Lady Yellow Jackets bounce back nicely from recent losing streak

GULFPORT — The St. Martin girls are coming back around quite nicely.
After starting the current campaign off at a solid 8-1, the Lady Yellow Jackets dropped four straight games, including their first three Region 4-7A contests.
However, St. Martin is now on a four game win streak after a 56-33 road win over Gulfport Friday night that puts head coach Jason Kennedy’s crew at 12-5 overall and 2-3 in the region race.

Kennedi Jenkins scored 14 points to lead the Lady Yellow Jackets to the win over Gulfport, while Kaleah Lowery and Kylenn Ward chipped in 12 points apiece for St. Martin and Janilla Curtis added 10 points to the winning effort.

The decision snapped a five game losing streak for the Lady Admirals, as they fell to 14-4 overall and 2-3 in the region race. Gulfport was coming off a 61-25 route of Long Beach three days earlier on Tuesday. In that game, the Lady Admirals got 15 points and five boards from Serenity Turner-Hosey.

Meanwhile, that hat win over the Lady Admirals for St. Martin came on the heels of the first region win of the season three days earlier for the Lady Yellow Jackets in a 56-10 thumping of home-standing D’Iberville.
St. Martin senior standout Lowery tallied 11 points in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer, to get her Lady Yellow Jackets off to a quick and commanding start at 20-0 after the opening period and the visitors never looked back in storming to the win.
Ten different players got into the scoring column for SMHS, as Kennedy emptied his bench in the second half. Lowery’s 16 points, all coming in the first half, were a game-high total to lead the Lady Yellow Jackets.
St. Martin remains on the road in region play and travels to Ocean Springs for a key encounter Tuesday night.
