PASCAGOULA — A huge Region 8-1A match-up between two teams with their sights set on making some noise in the upcoming Class 1A state playoffs is set for Thursday night.

And that makes the Resurrection vs. Richton game this week’s “Vertical Raise Game of the Week” for SouthMiss6 Sports.

This is a rematch between the Eagles and Rebels from two weeks ago in Richton, when the home team took a close win in exciting fashion 86-80. Richton stands 14-6 overall and is in first place in the region race at 3-1 thanks to that prior win over RCS. The Eagles are 15-4 overall and also sit at 3-1 in the loop.

Richton, who is directed by head coach Otto Crawford, a former Moss Point High football standout, dropped a 58-55 decision to Taylorsville right after that win over RCS for its only region loss. The Rebels are coming off of a 54-23 thumping of Stringer in league play on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, RCS stepped outside of region action earlier this week and whacked Bayshore Christian Academy out of Fairhope, Ala., in an MLK Day matinee affair Monday afternoon 66-37.

Taylorsville also sits at 3-1 so far in the region race. The Tartars travel to Richton for a rematch next week and then host RCS the last week of the regular season before hosting the upcoming region tournament.

The Eagles handed THS its only league loss so far last week here in Pascagoula 80-57.

The top seed in the regular season automatically gets a bye into the semifinals of the region tournament. In addition, that bye comes with an automatic bid into the upcoming Class 1A South State playoffs.
