BILOXI — The Biloxi girls basketball team is a few wins away from accomplishing something that has never been done in South Mississippi.

The Lady Indians currently sit at an impressive 22-1 overall as well as 9-0 in Region 4-7A play. For the first time ever, Biloxi is in a league with seven teams, meaning that it will play 12 total region contests, and the Lady Indians have three more league games left over the next two weeks to close out the regular season.

No girls prep basketball team in the largest classification in the “Southern Six” over the past five decades plus has won 12 region or district games in regular season play. That’s due in large part to no league with as many as seven teams ever playing a home-and-home series within the loop, like is being done this season in Region 4-7A with seven members.

The Lady Indians look to move to 10-0 in the region race Tuesday night, when they travel to Bert Jenkins Gym to face longtime arch-rival Gulfport for the second time this season.

Biloxi is riding a 21-game win streak coming into this match-up, and included in that successful span is a 51-7 win over the Lady Admirals last month in Biloxi.

The Lady Indians are coming off of a 40-7 win over D’Iberville on Friday in league play. That win came on the heels of a key region match-up against West Harrison, which BHS took 56-32.

In that win, Prep All-American center Zaniya Johnson posted a double-double, as the 6-foot-5 standout put in 19 points and hauled down 11 rebounds. Point guard Na’Kenya Terry chipped in 14 points and eight assists to the winning effort, while shooting guard Jayla Carriere added 11 points for Biloxi.

After facing Gulfport, Biloxi wraps up region play at home with two games hosting Ocean Springs Friday and then Harrison Central on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd.
