Each week until the first weekend in March at the overall state tournament in Jackson, SouthMiss6 Sports will be the place to be to keep up with the most complete and comprehensive info about all things prep basketball featuring stories and photos in the “Southern Six” counties of the state of Mississippi.

Each week we will take a look at at least five players and five games to keep an eye on as well as release our weekly “Super 7 in the Southern 6 Poll”.

Starting 5 in the “Southern 6

This week’s “Starting 5 in the Southern 6” players list is comprised of area standouts that helped their respective teams pick u big wins over the past week.

1. Morris Robertson, Gulfport — Robertson, who was recently selected to represent his home state in the prestigious Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Basketball Classic coming up in March, showed exactly why he’s one of the best players in the senior class in the state this season. Robertson drained four treys on the afternoon and finished with a team-high 22 points and earned Most Outstanding Player honors for the game in an MLK Day win over Meridian, and he followed that up the next day with a game-high 25 points as the Admirals sailed home to thump Harrison Central in the resumption of Region 4-7A play. Then, he posted a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Ocean Springs Friday night.
2. Gian Vera, Resurrection — The senior stalwart guard guided RCS to a pair of big wins last week. Thursday night, the Eagles took complete control from the opening tip off and rolled to a 71-35 thumping of Richton in an important Region 8-1A clash. Vera was an offensive catalyst all night for RCS, as he poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the way to the win. Resurrection started the week off with a Monday afternoon matinee affair and dismantled visiting Bayshore Christian Academy of Fairhope (Ala.) 66-37. RCS got out to an 18-3 lead after one quarter, as Vera and Keyshawn Nesbitt scored five points apiece in the period, and Vera’s total included a 3-pointer.Vera went on to add three more treys, and tally a game-high 22 points to lead RCS to the win.
3. Jabari Moye, Stone — The Tomcats got an outstanding overall effort from Moye in a huge 51-49 upset of previously unbeaten Wayne County Friday night. Moye as he tallied a game-high 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds as well as dishing out assists and grabbing five steals in the victorious outing.
4. Laikyn Moore, Picayune — The junior standout Moore stepped up and sealed the win for Picayune in win over Long Beach Friday night, tallying nine points including a 3-pointer in the second stanza as the Lady Tide took control and jumped out to a 19-point advantage at intermission. Moore finished with a game-high 23 points to pace Picayune to the win..
5. L.B. Bradley, George County — The junior Rebel All-Star standout had no intentions of letting George County’s three game losing streak in Region 3-6A go any further Friday night when once mighty Jackson Forrest Hill came calling to Sellers Gymnasium. Bradley poured in a game-high 39 points to lead his Rebels to an exciting 71-68 win in overtime over the Patriots. The decision moves GCHS to 13-11 overall and 3-5 in the region race. George County currently sits in fourth place in the league standings with one week left in regular season action.

2. St. Martin at West Harrison (girls) — Tuesday night in a big Region 4-7A contest.
3. Stone at East Central (Boys) — Tuesday night in a key Region 4-5A contest.
4. George County at Hattiesburg (boys) — Friday in a key Region 3-6A game.
5. Forrest County AHS at Moss Point (Girls) — Friday in a key Region 8-4A game.
