HATTIESBURG — The George County girls are still looking for that signature win of the current prep basketball season.

And, although the Lady Rebels have wrapped up regular season play, they still have one shot left at achieving that milestone. And, if they can pull it off, it would definitely be the biggest win of the season.

Home-standing Hattiesburg thumped GCHS 62-23 Friday night in Region 3-6A play. The loss ends regular season play for the Lady Rebels at 6-16 overall and 1-9 in the region race, and george County will be the sixth and final seed in the upcoming league tournament next week in Terry.

George County;’s Ava Hall scored five points in the first period, including a 3-pointer, as the Lady Rebels managed to keep it close early trailing just 13-7 heading into the second stanza.

However, Hatiesburg’s Sakara Portis, who tallied seven points in the first frame, duplicated that output in the next quarter and the Lady Tigers out-scored GCHS 17-5 in the period and steadily stretched the advantage to a commanding 30-12 at halftime.

, outscoring the Rebels 15-1 in the fourth quarter to win going away. Ava Hall had 13 points to lead George County (7-15, 2-8); Sakara Portis had 22 for Hattiesburg (11-11, 4-5).

George County will face either Terry or Hattiesburg with both its season and a berth in the upcoming Class 6A South State playoff berth on the line next week in the opening round of the Region 3-6A Tournament.
