Prep Basketball: East Central girls are playoff bound

LAUREL — The East Central girls split a pair of games in a 24 hour span to tip off the Region 4-5A Tournament.

But a big win Monday night was much more important than a loss Tuesday afternoon for the Lady Hornets.

East Central secured a berth in the upcoming Class 5A South State playoffs with an exciting 45-34 win over Stone in the opening round. The win not only moved ECHS to 7-14 on the campaign, but sent the Lady Hornets into the semifinals of the event well.

Makayla Thornton tallied 16 points to pace East Central to the win, while Olivia Tanner chipped in 13 points to the winning cause. Taliyah Nichols added 10 points for the Lady Hornets, and Allie Loper had six points

Stone got 13 points from Kornae Green and 10 points from Kadeyn Myers, as the Lady Tomcats ended the season at 2-23.

On Tuesday afternoon, top seed Wayne County smashed East Central 75-39 in the semifinals. The Lady Hornets will play in the consolation game Friday afternoon.
