Prep Basketball: Hawks fly into Class 6A state playoffs after a win over Bearcats Monday

PASCAGOULA — The Hancock girls are the top seed in Region 4-6A and have already sealed a spot in the upcoming state playoffs no matter what happens this week.

And now, after a big win Monday night to open the Region 4-6A Tournament, their male counterparts have joined them with a berth in the chase for a state title as well.

The third seed Hawks toppled Long Beach 55-49 here at Pascagoula High to move to 10-19 overall, and will face second seed Picayune Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 in the semifinals of the event with a spot in the championship contest on the line.

Jakari Lewis scored 12 points to pace the Hawks to the win, while both Kaison Koenenn and Cody Barr chipped in 10 points apiece to the winning effort. Peyon Lee had seven points.

Long Beach got 15 points from Leroy Cameron, and 10 points from Kevan Smyres. Carlos Finch had eight points for the Bearcats, and Donovan Magee seven points as LBHS finished the season at 10-16.
