LAUREL — The Vancleave boys basketball team is playoff bound!
The Bulldogs slipped past Purvis 49-45 Monday night in the final game of the first day in the Region 4-5A Tournament. The win pushes head coach Liam Openshaw’s troops into the semifinal round of the event, where they will face top seed Wayne County at 5:30 Tuesday afternoon.





The win also assures VHS of a berth in the upcoming Class 5A South State playoffs next week. The Bulldogs are now 13-14 overall.
Vancleave got five points each from Royce Gatz, Reece Thomason and Brayden Woodworth down the stretch in the fourth quarter to seal the closed win, and Maddox Henley added four points in the final frame as well as the Bulldogs outscored the Tornadoes 19-14 in the period.

Gatz paced VHS with 15 points, while Henley chipped in 12 points to the winning effort and Woodworth added 10 points.
Wayne County is 23-1 on the season.
