OCEAN SPRINGS — Over the past decade or so, George County has been one of the most successful prep baseball teams in the “Southern Six”.
However, as yet another season got started across the state of Mississippi earlier this week, Ocean Springs made a statement as well.
The home-standing Greyhounds clipped the Rebels 4-1 Tuesday night in the lid-lifter for both teams. Ocean Springs will head to Lucedale for the return trip in the home-and-home series Friday night.

Ocean Springs broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Greyhounds produced a three spot to take control and go on the secure the win.
In that decisive frame, Adam Clower put OSHS up for good with with a one-out, RBI-single that plated Justin San Miguel. Then, with two outs, Cash Champagne delivered the big blow for the Greyhounds with a two-run double that sealed the deal.
The two teams traded runs earlier in the game. Clower’s run-scoring double gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in the bootom of the third inning. But the Rebels responded immediately to knot this back up with an RBI-sacrifice fly from Harrison Havard in their next at bat.

Patterson Gilfoil picked up the pitching win with almost two innings of work in relief of the starter Clower. Four OSHS hurlers combined on a two-hitter in the decision. Colton French finished the last two innings to earn a save.
Clower’s two hits and pair of RBI’s led the Greyhounds at the plate.
Carson Pierce started and took the loss George County, which played for the Class 6A state title the past two seasons. The Rebels have made five state championship appearances in the past 11 seasons.
