Prep Basketball: Long live the King — Panthers take third straight Region 4-6A championship

PASCAGOULA — Long live the King.
Since the first ever expansion into seven classifications in the state of Mississippi three years ago, the Pascagoula boys basketball team has ruled over the ranks of Region 4-6 with an iron hand.

The Panthers recorded their 36th straight region win Friday night, handling upset-minded Hancock 70-55 in the championship game of the league tournament. The decision also gives PHS its third consecutive region title, and moves veteran head coach Loreno Wright’s crew to 24-6 overall.
The up-start Hawks, after two big wins to begin the event, fall to 11-20 overall. But, just like the Panthers, Hancock will open the Class 6A South State playoffs at home next weekend.

Pascagoula placed four players in double digits in the balanced game-winning attack, as Blake Nettles led the way with 15 points, while Adam Griffin dadded 11 points and both Ireyion Harvey and Will Rogers chipped in 10 points apaice.
The loss overshadowed an impressive performance by Hancock’s Cody Barr, who tallied a game-high 22 points for the Hawks, including a quartet of 3-pointers. Jaxson Knight had 13. points also for HHS, and Peyton Lee added 10 points.
