TAYLORSVILLE — The Resurrection boys basketball team captured the Region 8-1A championship in exciting fashion Friday night.
The Eagles knocked off home-standing Taylorsville 58-54 in the league tournament title contest. The win was the second in just over 24 hours for RCS in the event, after the Eagles thumped Stringer 67-30 Thursdy afternoon in the semifinal round.
The pair of wins puts RCS at a solid 21-4 on the season, and the Eagles will host an opening round Class 1A South State playoff game Tuesday night at 6 p.m.


Resurrection got five points from Tyrese Ricardo, including a key 3-pointer, down the stretch as the Eagles out-scored the Tartars 13-10 in the fourth quarter to wrap up the win.
Senior standout guard Gian Vera tallied a co game-high 24 points to pace RCS, while Keshawn Nesbitt chipped in 13 points to the winning effort and Ricardo added 10 points.
Taylorsville got 24 points from Jacorbin Sullivan in the loss, including 15 in the third frame as he drained a trio of treys to keep the Taartars within striking distance. Taylorsville, now 15-9 overall, will also open the state playoffs at home Tuesday night.


It was expected to be the third meeting of the season betwen top-seeded RCS and second seed Richton in the finals, but Taylorsville upset the Bulldogs 66-65 Thursday night behind 24 points from the sophomore Sullivan.
Vera scored 14 of his points in the first half, as the Eagles took a slight 30-27 lead into halftime.
Resurrection tipped off tourney action with that big 47 point win over Stringer on Thursday.
Ricardo dropped in a game-high 20 points in that contest, while Vera contributed 18 points to the winning cause and Gianfranco Diaz added 10 points. Denzel Eaton had eight points for RCS as well.
