Prep Basketball: Moss Point girls moving on to Class 4A South State Quarterfinal round

MOSS POINT — The Moss Point girls basketball team is now one win away from winning 20 games this season.
The Lady Tigers are also one win away from clinching a berth in the Class 4A overall Final Four in Jackson for the fourth time in eight seasons as well.
Moss Point slipped past Northeast Lauderdale 42-37 in the second round of the Class 4A South State playoffs Friday night. The win moves head coach Ethan Porter’s troops to 19-13 overall, but, more importantly, the Lady Tigers will head to Perk next week to play in the Class 4A South State Quarterfinals event on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College with a trip to The Big House on the line.

The home team trailed 15-6 after the first period, but the Lady Tigers turned the tables for good in the second stanza out-scoring the visitors 17-6 as Trinity Magee and Kirsten Bailey combined for 12 points and both drained a 3-pointer as well.
Magee went on to add 12 more points in the second half, including 10 as well as another trey down the stretch in the final frame, to help MPHS secure the win.
Magee tallied a game-high 19 points to lead the Lady Tigers, while Landyn Miller added nine points to the winning effort.

Jaleria Bolton had 11 for Northeast Lauderdale in the loss and Patience Sumpter had 10 points.
Moss Point played for the Class 4A state title in 2020, and fell in the semifinals in both 2019 and 2021. Porter’s crew is looking for a chance to return to Jackson to compete for the program’s first-ever state title once more with one more win next week.

The next step for MPHS is a date with Newton County Friday in the next round.
