Prep Basketball: Resurrection rolls on into Class 1A Quarterfinals behind Vera’s 39 points

By CURTIS ROCKWELL/Sports Director PASCAGOULA — Resurrection is headed to the Class 1A South State playoffs Quarterfinal round. The Eagles hammered Hollandale-Simmons Saturday afternoon 83-63 to pick up their second home playoff win in five day span here at Glenn Murphy Gymnasium. The win moves RCS to 23-4 overall, and it sends the Eagles of head coach David Pilger to Raymond for the next round Wednesday with a berth in the overall Class 1A Final Four on the line.

Resurrection was in complete control from the opening tip in its latest outing, as senior guard Gian Vera poured in a game-high 39 points to propel the Eagles to the comfortable win. In fact, Vera dropped in 12 of that point total in the first frame, including a pair of 3-pointers, and RCS almost doubled up the the visiting Blue Devils at 25-13 entering the second stanza. Keyshawn Nesbitt had 10 first half points for the Eagles, including a trey, and both Vera and Denzel Eaton each drained a 3-pointer in the second period as RCS went into halftime in complete control at 46-23 and never looked back.

Vera continued his offensive explosion with 12 more points in the third quarter, and 10 more points down the stretch in the final frame, including a pair of treys, to close things out. In addition to Vera’s 39 points, Nesbitt chipped in 18 points to the winning cause and Eaton added 11 points for the home team. Hollandale-Simmons ends the season at 6-22 overall. Next up for RCS is a date with the Piney Woods School at Raymond High.
