Prep Baseball: Admirals sweep Red Rebels in battle of new head coaches in Region 4-7A

By CURTIS ROCKWELL/Sports Director LYMAN — In a battle of a pair of new head coaches in Region 4-7A, Gulfport won the war. The Admirals collected 13 hits Saturday afternoon in running past the Red Rebels 13-4 here at newly minted Pat Olmi Field. The win completed a three game sweep in the opening league series for both the Admirals and their new skipper Myles Gentry, and HCHS and its new mentor Jeff Kovacevich.

Gulfport is now 6-3 overall, and 3-0 in the region race, while the Red Rebels are now 3-6 overall and 0-3 in league play. Saturday’s win followed similar results from earlier in the week, in wins by Gulfport of 13-2 on Tuesday and 8-0 on Friday. The series finale went just as smoothly for the Admirals. Brant Rounsaville led the way at the plate for GHS, with three hits, including a triple, and a trio of RBI’s also. Bash Plummer and Eli Carter each added two hits apiece to the winning cause, while Sam Tindell drove in a pair of runs as well. Both Plummer and Brodie Hignight each had a double. Thomas Stennis tossed just over five frames in relief on the hill to earn the win.

Harrison Central got two hits from Parrish Laiche, and both M.J. Conner and Bubba Harris each had a double. Laiche, one of a quartet of Red Rebel hurlers, took the loss. Gulfport is off in region action this weeek, while HCHS gets the other co-leader in the league standings in Ocean Springs in a three game set. On Friday night, Admiral sophomore staring pitcher Mason Little twirled six solid stanzas of one-hit ball to earn the pitching win, striking out 11 in the process. In the series opener, Hignight had three his, including a double, and drove in three runs to guide Gulfport to the win.
