GULFPORT — Since the expansion to seven classifications for the first time ever in the state of Mississippi in 2024, Ocean Springs has won back-to-back Region 4-7A baseball titles.

Also, Gulfport has finished second in both of those seasons.

And, that makes Saturday’s series finale between the Greyhounds and Admirals this week’s “Vertical Raise Game of the Week” for SouthMiss6 Sports.

Ocean Springs took game one of the battle for supremacy in the region 2-0 on the road Tuesday night. Game two is set for Friday night in Ocean Springs, with the series finale back at Herbert Wilson Park here in Gulfport Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The Greyhounds are 6-1 vs. the Admirals since the longtime foes joined Region 4-7A, including a three game sweep last season in a showdown in the final week of the regular season for the top seed in the loop.

Ocean Springs delivered the first blow this year Tuesday night.

The Greyhounds blanked home-standing Gulfport 2-0 here at Herbert Wilson Park Tuesday night in the first game of a key Region 4-7 series. The win moves OSHS to 15-2 overall, but more importantly puts another notch between the Greyhounds and Admirals in the region race as Ocean Springs leads the league at 7-0 and Gulfport sits at 5-2 in the league and 10-7 overall.

Ocean Springs is under the direction of third-year head coach Ryne long, while former GHS standout player Myles Gentry is in his first campaign leading his alma mater the Admirals.
