Prep Baseball: Tomcats sweep past the Hornets in three Region 4-5A games, again

HURLEY — For the second time in three seasons, Stone swept East Central in Region 4-5A play.

The Tomcats completed a three game sweep with a 9-8 road win over the Hornets Saturday afternoon. The decision moves Stone, under first-year head coach Adam Dyess, to 12-7 overall, and an even 3-3 in the region race. East Central, which is just off back-to-back Class 5A state titles several seasons ago, falls to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the loop.

Stone never trailed Saturday, leading 5-0 early and 9-4 later in earning the big sweep.

Stone collected 16 hits in the win, as Brax Batson, Saylor Wintzell and Nolan Scott all tallied three hits apiece in the winning effort.

Kellan Burge had two hits, including a solo home run to lead off the game, and Batson followed just two batters later with a two-run blast that put Stone up 3-0 before the popcorn was ready in the concession stand.

Scott had two doubles in his total, while Braxton had a double as did Charley Paslay.

Dalton Danzey worked five frames to pick up the pitching win.

Christian McFaul went the same distance for ECHS to take the loss.

Both Grant Vick and Troy Driskell had two hits apiece for the Hornets, while McFaul, Driskell, Brody Long and Mason Prouty posted a double each for ECHS and Prouty had two RBIs.

Stone took a 5-2 win in game two on Friday night at home, as Scott smacked a three-run walk-off home run with no outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Ayden Obenhaus also homered for the Tomcats, and both he and Paslay had two hits apiece in the winning effort.

Burge went the complete game distance to earn the win, striking out 11 in the process.

Gage Damazio had two hits for the Hornets.

Anthony Bonfiglio suffered the loss.

In the series opner in Hurley Tuesday night, Stone slipped past the home-standing Hornets 2-1 in 11 innings.

Batson drove in the game-winning run with an RBI-single, while Obenhaus tallied a game-high three hits. Carter Williams had two hits, including a triple, and Scott posted a pair of doubles.

Dalton Danzey picked up the win in relief, after Braxton worked almost 10 full innings striking out 13.

Long had two hits, including a double, for ECHS. Zaine McKee took the loss.

Stone also swept ECHS in a three game series in 2024.
