Prep Baseball: Blue Devils bounce arch-rival Maroon Tide 8-5 Tuesday night

PICAYUNE — Coming into the week, only two Pearl River Central head coaches had won a game over arch-rival Picayune on the baseball field in the past two decades.
And current Blue Devil leader Buddy Turnage became the third one to do so Tuesday night.

Visiting PRC broke open a close 3-2 lead with a four run sixth stanza and eventually made that lead stand up in an 8-5 win here at Kent Kirkland Field in Region 4-6A play. The win pushed PRC to 15-5 overall, but more importantly to a perfect 7-0 in the region race where the Blue Devils remain knotted with Hancock for the top spot.
Picayune dropped to 4-3 in the loop, still good enough for the third spot, and to 11-9 overall.
The Blue Devils sent nine batters to the plate in the decisive sixth, and collected three singles, a pair of walks, a sacrifice squeeze play and took advantage of a key Maroon Tide error in compiling the four runs.

Kendall Morrison registered a pair of doubles to pace PRC at the plate, while Blake Gill tallied a triple and drove in a run in the winning effort.
Roman Mitchell worked almost six full stanzas on the mound, striking out nine and scattering three hits, to earn the pitching win. Landon Lowe finished up and earned a save.
Picayune managed to rally after falling behind 7-2, thanks in large part to a two-run single by Blaze Kellar in the bottom of the sixth, but the deficit proved to be too large.
Colt Robertson took the loss for the Maroon Tide.
