Prep Baseball: Poplarville has its sights set on Region 7-4A title after 6-4 win over Columbia

POPLARVILLE — Poplarville is on the verge of winning the Region 7-4A title.
The Hornets went on the road and picked up a key 6–4 win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon in a battle for supremacy in the league standings. The decision pushed Poplarville to 8-1 in the region race, with three games against fourth place McComb left this week, while the Wildcats end up league play at 9-3.

The Hornets now need just one win over the Tigers to earn the top seed in the loop.
On Saturday, in the rubber match against Columbia, the Hornets rallied from a 4-2 deficit with four runs over their final two at bats to pull out the all-important win. Included in that game-winning rally was a three run sixth stanza, in which Aiden Smith’s two-run double gave PHS its first lead of the game at 5-4.
Both Brayden Lee and Jett Smith each had two hits apiece for Poplarville, while Chase Sones and Aiden Smith posted a double each. Chadwick Brown also drove in two runs in the winning effort.

Ty Keys threw five frames and struck out six to pick up the pitching win.
In a 6-4 loss to Columbia at home Friday night that evened up the series at one game apiece, Smith had two hits and two RBIs for PHS while Keys had two hits as well.Tuesday in a doubleheader against McComb.
