LUCEDALE — Nykesha Carter Jenkins is coming home.
According to sources close to the situation, Jenkins, a former multi-sport standout athlete at George County High School, is expected to be named as the next girls’ head basketball coach at her alma mater. She has served as an assistant coach at St. Martin for the past several years under then head coach Jason Kennedy.
Kennedy recently left to take the same post at D’Iberville, and now apparently Jenkins will follow suit leaving the Lady Yellow Jackets program for her first head coaching job in the “Southern Six”.
Her hiring is expected to be approved at the next George County School Board meeting, which is set for Tuesday night.

Jenkins, a 2000 graduate of GCHS under her maiden name Nykesha Carter, earned all-star honors on both the basketball court and the softball diamond in her days leading the Lady Rebels programs. She was also a member of the GCHS track and field team that won four straight state championships freom 1997-2000, where she teamed up with Christy Fairley to help the school achive that historic milestone under head coach Melanie Black, who was also the basketball coach.
Jenkins will take the helm of the Lady Rebels squad from yet another GCHS grad in Terry Bradley, But Bradley isn’t going anywhere, as after one season leading both the girls team again and the boys he will go back to just hadling the boys head coaching duties next season.
In her senior season at GCHS, Jenkins teammed up with Felicia Spivery to help lead the Lady Rebels to a sparkling 34-2 record and a Class 4A runner-up finish in the state tournament, where they fell in close and excruciating fashion 58-56 to unbeaten Raymond.

In her four years at St. Martin with Kennedy, the Lady Yellow Jackets went 85-36, including a Region 4-7A title as well as an appearance in the overall Class 7A Final Four in 2024.
“First and foremost, I want to congratulate Coach Jenkins on earning this opportunity to become a head coach — it’s something she has worked extremely hard for and truly deserves,” Kennedy told SouthMiss6 Sports Monday afternoon. “Over the past four years at St. Martin, she has been more than just an assistant; she’s been a cornerstone of our program. Her work ethic, passion for the game, and ability to connect with our players helped shape the culture we’ve built. She’s played a major role in our success, both on and off the court, and her impact will be felt here for a long time. I’m incredibly proud of her and excited to see her lead her own program — they’re getting a special one.”

Jenkins is married to current Moss Point head football coach Derrick Jenkins.
