Prep Baseball: Greene County pushes Poplarville’s season to the brink

POPLARVILLE — A successful season sudenly sits on the brink for Poplarville baseball. The Hornets fell at home to Greene County in the opening game of that Class 4A South State semifinal series 10-8 Saturday. Poplarville now faces a must win situation on the road Monday night in game two in Leakesville. A third and final game, if needed, would be back in Poplarville Tuesday night.

The Wildcats overcame a late 4-2 deficit by exploding for eight runs in a decisive top of the sixth stanza. Greene County sent 12 batters to the plate, collected three doubles, two singles, two walks and two hit batsmen to take a 10-4 lead at that point. Poplarville got a pair of hits apiece from Ty Keys, Jett Smith and Brayden Lee in the loss. Keys had a triple and Aiden Smith a double, while Jett Smith drove in a pair of runs as well. Jett Smith, one of three Hornet hurlers, took the pitching loss.

Meanwhile, Kash Kitrell, one of a trio of GCHS pitcher, picked up the win. Zaine Moody and Carsen Sanford each had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Wildcats at the plate, while Kittrell also added a pair of hits to the winning attack. Noah McLeod and Eli Herring also drove in two runs apiece.
Poplarville is now 24-10 overall coming into the week, while Greene County is 23-7.
