FLOWOOD — The annual Mississippi Association of Coaches Multi-Sports Clinic wrapped up Friday.

The annual affair got underway with a golf outing Monday before things really get rolling on Tuesday as hundreds of high school coaches from all across the state descended on the Sheraton Hotel here just outside of Jackson.

Sessions were conducted for participants in as many as a dozen different sports and activities throughout the week. For many coaching staffs in different sports across the state, as well as the “Southern Six”, a trip to the clinic is a sort of rite of passage and the tradition has been passed down from staff to staff over the years.

As usual, the “Southern Six” is well represented on the speaker podium throughout the many different sessions covering various sports throughout the week once again this year.

Gulfport head football coach Blake Pennock, fresh off leading his Admirals the their first ever Class 7A state championship, took to the banquet circuit on Thursday and spoke to a good-sized crowd on “Plug & Play RPOs – 2nd Level Reads for Inside & Outside Runs”.

He was joined on the football side of the ledger by former Gulfport defensive coordinator Zach Green, who recently took over as head coach at Pascagoula High, that spoke on “championship defense”, as well as new Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding and Columbia High head coach Chip Bilderbeck, whose Wildcats went 15-0 last season and took the Class 4A state title.

In basketball, former Pascagoula head coach Lorenzo Wright, who recently departed for Harrison Central, accepted the statewide “Basketball Coach of the Year’ award. There was also some on court demonstrations and instruction presented as well.

In baseball, Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco was a featured speaker.

Track and field, soccer, volleyball, tennis, archery, bowling and golf as well as powerlifting were also some of the sports covered at the clinic.

There was also breakout sessions for administrators and athletic directors, as well as sports medicine providers as well during the clinic. Also on the final day, sessions covering Rules & Eligibility, district meetings and a general business session took place.
