SouthMiss6 Sports is rolling out its annual roster of the top returning standout prep football players in our coverage area. The “Sweet 16 in the Southern Six” list was compiled by coaches and sports writers who have been following the action on the gridiron in South Mississippi for the past three decades.
Next up on the list is a productive running back making noise in the Class 5A ranks:
Ayden Green
Stone | 5-8, 155 | Junior
The speedy Green made his mark with the Tomcats and quickly opened some eyes last season as a sophomore when he burst upon the scene and helped guide Stone to an 8-4 overall mark.
He produced 1,476 all-purpose yards and 15 total touchdowns, and was an offensive catalyst for the Tomcats on the ground, registering 1,374 yards and 14 of those scores.
Green was. vital cog in helping Stone close the regular season on a six game win streak, including going 5-0 down the stretch in Region 4-5A play to capture the league championship.
It was just the second region title for the Tomcats in the past three decades.
For his impressive work, Green was named Second Team Class 5A All-State.
The Tomcats opened the Class 5A South State playoffs with an a 35-7 romp over visiting Sumrall, as Green ran roughshod over the Bobcats defense for 177 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It was also Stone’s seventh straight win after starting the season off at 1-2.
Unfortunately, the season came to a heart-breaking end for Stone the next week when Laurel’s Kenneth Jeronimo nailed a 23-yard field goal as the final horn expired to push the Golden Tornadoes past home-standing Stone 24-21 in the Class 5A South State semifinals at A.L. May Stadium in Perkinston on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
He ran for over 100 yards and a score in that game as well.
S0 now Green and his Tomcats have their sights set on winning consecutive region titles for the first time in 32 years.
Stone opens the season on Fri., Aug., 28th hosting Hancock.
