Prep Basketball Notebook: Transfers abound for pair of Pascagoula programs

PASCAGOULA — Even though we are staring straight down the barrel at a brand new football season, there are some notes on the hardwood worth catching up on in the “Southern Six” as well this time of the year.

Panther transfers

Pascagoula will be under the direction of a new head coach next year, and the Panthers will also be without a pair of standout players that helped guide them to the Class 6A state championship as well this year.

Twin brothers Adam and Jacob Griffin only played for PHS for one semester, but boy what a semester that was.

The Griffins transferred in mid-season from Pensacola, Fla, and PHS didn’t lose a game down the stretch after the calendar flipped to January en route to the first basketball state title in school history.

Adam Griffin, who fouled out late in the game, paced PHS with 15 points in the championship contest win over Terry and was named the Most Valuable Player in the game.

However, as both begin their respective senior campaigns, the Griffin twins have moved back to the Sunshine State to finish out their prep hoops careers.

New Panther head coach Regis Huddleston will make his debut in the first chair of the PHS bench in early November.

Resurrection transfers

Just a few miles across town in Pascagoula, the boy’s basketball team at Resurrection High enjoyed perhaps its most successful season in program history as well.

But, the Eagles, who were set to join the Panthers at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson but for the overall Class 1A state championship event, suddenly saw their season come to an end when it was ruled that they were using an ineligible player.

The Eagles will also be with a trio of players that were supposed to be coming back but have since moved on as well.

Big man Simeon Ballard, a 6-f00t-9 dominating presence inside at center, has transferred down the Gulf Coast and joined defending Class 3A state champ St. Stanislaus.

In addition, Keyshawn Nesbitt and Denzel Eaton have both joined Class 7A Ocean Springs for the upcoming campaign.
