D’IBERVILLE – After a 45-minute rain delay, the D’Iberville Warriors (2-0) went on a four touchdown second quarter run to pull away from Gautier (1-1) to take a 28-0 lead before halftime. They would add another score on their first possession of the third quarter on their way to a 35-14 win over the Gators on Friday.

The game was stopped due to lightning at the 5:50 mark of the first quarter. Play resumed at 8:00 o’clock, and the Warriors came out firing on defense, registering a sack on third-and-1. Then they weren’t fooled as the Gators faked a punt and ran for it on fourth-and-2. The Warriors’ defense recorded a tackle-for-loss, and the offense had good field position at the Gautier 47-yard line.

Senior signal-caller Jordan Walley was a highlight reel for the Warriors, first scatting for 16 yards when facing a third down with 18 yards to go for a first down. He would close the eleven-play drive with a 17-yard keeper through the middle of the line of scrimmage.

The Warriors were successful with an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, and very quickly they found themselves in excellent field position with the ball at the Gautier 46-yard line. And again, Walley would figure in a big way, first attacking the left side of the line of scrimmage before blasting to the home sideline for a 22-yard gain.

Four plays later, facing a third-and-15, Walley would connect with Christian Butler near the end zone for a touchdown two minutes after the first score.

On the second snap of the Gators’ ensuing possession, Walley got a read on a Gautier pass and he jumped on it and raced into the endzone for a 35-yard pick six. D’Iberville led 21-0 after Melzer Villela’s third PAT kick with 6:55 left on the second quarter clock.

“Jordan Walley kind of put the team on his back when we needed him the most, and they played, and I was proud of them for that,” said Warriors’ coach Josh Ladner. “It was a great team effort. The defense played great. They couldn’t move the ball much. I was proud of them for that.

“I wished that we could have finished the game a little cleaner, a little more disciplined,” said Ladner. “But we’ve got a lot more work to do.

“But I’m really proud of my defense,” said Ladner. “Coach Broussard and the defensive side of the ball do an awesome job of getting these guys prepared week to week.”

Walley connected with Matthew Fairley for a 10-yard scoring toss with 3:10 left on the second quarter clock to close out the first half scoring.

The Warriors would open the second half with a 7-play drive with Walley connecting with junior receiver Jay Allen for a 15-yard score to close out the Warriors’ scoring.

Gautier would get on the scoreboard late in the third quarter with their first score, and they would close out the game’s scoring near the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter with a running clock.

“It was a struggle,” said Gautier coach Marc High. “First the weather kind of got us. Then, give D’Iberville the credit, they were the other part of it. We didn’t play very disciplined football, so we’ll get back to work on Monday.”

Gautier hosts West Harrison next Friday, and D’Iberville hosts Seminary next Friday.
