With the start of yet another prep football season across South Mississippi last week, it’s time for our second installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.

“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week before we move on to the next week.

Here are seven things we noticed in the “Southern 6” Friday night:

1. Proud Panthers — Pascagoula’s Zach Green became the first new head coach in 46 years to pace the Panthers to wins in his first two games in charge Friday night. Home-standing Pascagoula turned back visiting Biloxi 17-8 here at War Memorial Stadium to move to 2-0 overall and drop the Indians to 1-1 as well on the new campaign. Green is the first new PHS head coach since Luther Kuykendall in 1982 to open his tenure with two straight wins. The previous six Panther mentors failed to do so. Sean Norvell ran for one touchdon for PHS and Jason Glaude threw for another.
2. Wild Warrior — D’Iberville senior standout quarterback Jordan Walley accounted for five touchdowns in a 35-14 win over Gautier. He threw for three scores, rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown and returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown as well as DHS moved to 2-0 and the Gators dropped to 1-1. The Warriors have now won three straight in the series and now lead the count by one at 11-10 after 21 meetings.
3. Au Revoir — Pass Christian stalwart signal-caller Paris Trivillion waved goodbye to the Purvis defense all night long in a 55-19 win at home. The senior quarterback accounted for over 500 yards of offense and six touchdowns, going 17-of-30 through the air for 260 yards and two scores and running for 256 yards and four more touchdowns on just nine carries. Running back Douglas White added 124 yards and a touchdown to the winning cause, and Brandon Laneaux caught six passes for 113 yards and a touchdown as PCHS moved to 2-0.
4. Recent Trend — Poplarville continued its recent domination in the annual series with its U.S. Highway 26 rival Friday night. The home-standing Hornets thumped Stone 42-0 in convincing fashion to move to 2-0 on the season. It marked Poplarville’s fourth straight win in the series, and PHS has won 12 out of the last 13 meetings dating back to 2008. Poplarville is now 2-0 while the Tomcats drop to 1-1 overall on the young campaign. Poplarville, like it usually does, produced a powerful ground attack in rolling to the win, as the dynamic backfield duo of senior Dandy Dozen standout Ty Keys and Kaden Bradford combined for right at 250 yards rushing and four scores.
5. Crab Trap — New St. Stanislaus quarterback Max Bernard accounted for five touchdowns total as the home-standing Rocks thumped arch-rival Bay High in the annual Battle for the Crab Trap at Brother Phillip Memorial Stadium. He completed 13 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for three more scores.
6. Bulldog Blitz — Vancleave pulled out a stunning upset Friday night as the Bulldogs out-lasted visiting Richland 49-46 in an offensive shootout to earn their first win of the season. Running back Cam Sherrod ran the ball 17 times for 201 yards and two touchdowns, while Bulldog quarterback Reece Thomason ran for three scores and running back Anthony Buxton rushed 14 times for 122 yards and a touchdown and caught a 52-yard score. The Bulldogs trailed by 14 points on several occasions.
7. OUCH! (Part 1 and 2) — Ocean Springs fell on the road 43-21 to Petal. The Greyhounds, which fell to Meridian 47-9 in week one, have now allowed over 40 points in two consecutive losses for the first time in 10 years. Meanwhile, perennial state power Picayune was dismantled by visiting Jackson Academy 48-17. After a 35-0 loss to Gulfport last week, this marks the most points allowed for the Maroon Tide in back-to-back weeks in 30 years, since 1996, when they gave up 80 points combined. However, its the biggest point differential in consecutive losses for Picayune since late in the 1994 season in a 55-0 to Moss Point and a 42-16 loss to Wayne County.
