Prep Football: Greyhounds continue dominance over Pascagoula Friday night

OCEAN SPRINGS — The last time Ocean Springs started off a football season at 0-2, the Greyhounds eventually went on to play for the Class 7A South State championship that same season.

Ocean Springs head coach Jake Bramlett certainly hopes that history repeats its self once again this year.

After an 0-2 start, his Greyhounds notched their initial win of the news campaign Friday night with a weather-delayed 22-12 decision over visiting Pascagoula.

The loss was the first of the season for the Panthers and new head coach Zach Green, who sit at 2-1 while OSHS is 1-2.

“Very proud of our kids and their growth last three weeks,” Bramlett said. “Pascagoula was a good football team. Both squads got after it for four quarters. We still have a lot of growing up to do, but the resilience of our guys is what I am proud of. The feeling I got tonight watching a young group figure out a way to put it together reminds me of why I do this job.”

The win also helped OSHS maintain a recent dominance in this annual series, as OSHS has now won five straight against PHS and six-of-the-last seven games as well.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead and never trailed in the latest renewal of this Jackson County rivalry.

Ocean Springs took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field, and quarterback Chalmers Berglind found wide out Logan Carter on an 8-yard scoring slant to make it 7-0 just over two minutes into the game.

After a botched snap on a punt by PHS set up the Greyhounds at the Panther 16, Berglind hit wide out Trenton Peterson on a 9-yard scoring strike and the home team was off and running at 13-0 with a minute left in the opening period.

But Pascagoula responded as the second stanza unfolded with a pair of 1-yard quarterback keepers by Jason Glaude. Sandwiched in between those was a 24-yard field goal by OSHS place-kicker Evan Ta, that sent the two teams into halftime with the Greyhounds up 16-12.

The third period was scoreless, and after that 24-yard boot from Ta in the first half, he also produced the only scoring in the second half with two more field goals.

His 27-yarder at the 10:24 mark of the final frame made it 19-12, and he then sealed the win with a 40-yard dart with just :51 seconds left to play.

The game was delayed by lightning for about 45 minutes in the second quarter.

Ocean Springs actually started off 0-3 two years ago, but went on to win eight-of-its-next nine games to play for the South State title.
