With the start of yet another prep football season across South Mississippi last week, it’s time for our second installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.
“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week before we move on to the next week.

Here are seven things we noticed in the “Southern 6” Friday night:
- Finally — Picayune got its first win of the season with a 34-31 overtime win over Biloxi on the road Friday. The Maroon Tide never trailed in regulation, but Biloxi scored first in overtime on a field goal and the Maroon Tide answered on the second snap of their overtime possession to secure the win. Junior running back Kendall Jett pushed through between the tackles for a 4-yard score to give the Maroon Tide the win.
- Finally (Part 2) — The last time Ocean Springs started off a football season at 0-2, the Greyhounds eventually went on to play for the Class 7A South State championship that same season. Ocean Springs head coach Jake Bramlett certainly hopes that history repeats its self once again this year. After an 0-2 start, his Greyhounds notched their initial win of the news campaign Friday night with a weather-delayed 22-12 decision over visiting Pascagoula. The loss was the first of the season for the Panthers and new head coach Zach Green, who sit at 2-1 while OSHS is 1-2.
- Stung — For the second straight season, St. Martin has jumped out to a solid 3-0 start to the season after coming out of the gate with three straight wins over “Southern Six” foes. The Yellow Jackets completely dismantled visiting Stone 45-14 Friday night here at Joe Barlow Stadium. The Yellow Jackets had that total by halftime this week, taking a commanding 42-7 lead into intermission and setting in play the running clock for the entire second half. In that decisive first half, St. Martin standout sophomore signal-caller Dawsen Sullivan made all the difference as he accounted for five of the six Yellow Jacket touchdowns over the first two quarters. Sullivan twice hooked up with his brother Dawsey Sullivan on touchdown tosses, and Dawsen Sullivan also ran for three scores as well.
- Five Alive — As it has been for the past three seasons, the magic number for Poplarville is 5, as in the Number 5 jersey worn by Ty Keys. Now a senior, Keys is back playing Superman for the Hornets, and they needed all of his magic Friday night to get past Hancock 49-32 at the Hornet’s Nest on the PHS campus. Poplarville improved to 3-0 for the season, while Hancock dropped to 1-2. Keys, who plans to sign with Miami, scored six touchdowns after the Hawks rolled out to an early 13-0 lead, beginning with an 87-yard kickoff return late in the first quarter.
- New Home — Gulfport christened its brand new on campus Stadium in fine fashion Friday night. Admirals quarterback Jackson Wolverton threw for four first-half touchdown passes to set the tone early as Gulfport thumped visiting Laurel 51-0. The win moves GHS to 2-0 on the young season after an open date last week. Wolverton finished up with almost 200 yards passing, while running back Jo Jo Thomas ran for 86 yards and one score and caught a touchdown toss as well. Syniker Taylor, Jr., hauled in a pair of those scoring strikes. The Gulfport defense has yet to allow a point so far this season.
- Devils Deal — It was a struggle, but in the end Pearl River Central remained unbeaten by keeping East Central win-less Friday night. The Blue Devils rallied to pull out a 30-23 win over the Hornets on the road here in Shirley Stadium on the ECHS campus. PRC is now 3-0, while the Hornets drop to 0-3. PRC quarterback Titus Feaster hit wide out Kendall Morrison with a 17-yard touchdown pass for the decisive points late in the fourth period. Feaster then added the 2-point conversion with just 1:20 to play to end the scoring and enable the visitors to overcome a slight 23-22 deficit to earn the win.
- Sail On — Pass Christian standout senior quarterback Paris Trivillion threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 197 yards and one score in a close 40-38 win over visiting Presbyterian Christian. Trivillion also set the school’s career passing record in the process, as wide out Brandon Laneaux caught four passes for 125 yards and two of those touchdown passes. The Pirates moved to 3-0 so far with the win.
