Prep Football: St. Martin can notch a mark in program history Friday night vs. West Harrison

St. Martin is off to a perfect 4-0 start on the football field for the second straight season.
Now, also for the second consecutive campaign, the Yellow Jackets hope to be 5-0 after their first taste of league play as well.
And, if SMHS head coach Woody Cagnolatti can lead his troops to yet another win, it’ll be an historic one.
St. Martin has never, in its 68 year history of having a football program, opened two straight seasons at 5-0.
The 4-0 start for St.Martin is the fourth such start for the Yellow Jackets in the past 11 seasons. But trying to make a drive for five has been an entirely different story over the years.

In 2019, SMHS started off at 4-0 en route to an eventual 6-1 mark. But a 47-16 loss in week five to Gulfport was the lone blemish.
Before these past two seasons, the last time St. Martin started 5-0 was in 2015. However, a 28-10 loss to Gulfport was the lone blow in an 8-1 start that led to a solid 9-3 campaign.
In the three year stretch from 1987-1989, SMHS started those seasons off at 4-0, 3-0 and 4-0.
And, 60 years ago in 1965 and 1966, St.Martin started 4-0-1 in and 3-0,respectively.
That 1965 reason is an historic one for the Yellow Jackets as well. The 10-0-1 mark that year is the best-ever in program history. But, the tie came in the first game of the season, 12-12 against Harrison Central.

St. Martin travels to Gulfport to face West Harrison Friday night.
It marks just the sixth all-time meeting between the Yellow Jackets and Hurricanes all-time, as Region 4-7A play begins for both teams. St. Martin has won four of the five prior meetings, including a 26-21 win at home last year that went a long way in keeping the Hurricanes from making the playoffs for the first time ever. 
The two teams first met in 2009, and the only win for the Hurricanes in the series came the next season at home 27-0. St. Martin is 4-0 for the second straight season, and WHHS sits at 2-2. The Hurricanes blew by Laurel 61-41 on the road last week.
St. Martin hammered Hancock 42-14 last week on the road at Brett Favre Field in the Kiln.
