Prep Football: Greyhounds take down Indians in Region 4-7A opener for both teams

BILOXI — Ten is a magic number.

At least it is for Ocean Springs when playing Biloxi in football.

The visiting Greyhounds held on for a 21-14 win over the Indians here at the Biloxi High School Sports Complex Friday night in the Region 4-7A opener for both squads. The victory was the 10th straight for OSHS in this annual affair, which dates back over 100 years. That current streak is the longest for either side in the all-time series.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 14-0 halftime lead they would never relinquish, and then extended it out to 21-0 mid-way through the third frame while holding BHS scoreless until the fourth quarter.

In doing so, OSHS moved to 2-3 overall while the Indians lost their fourth straight game and are now 1-4. Ocean Springs was also missing three starters, including starting quarterback Chalmers Berglind, because of injuries.

“I think this game should define this group as a team,” OSHS head coach Jake Bramlett said. “A bunch of players and coaches doing whatever was necessary to start region play 1-0. Three really good players out. A freshman at quarterback. A tough and gritty defense that kept coming away with the ball despite some unfortunate calls. I’m ery proud of this football team. They are learning what it takes to be resilient and tough no matter the circumstances or how many people want them to fail.”

The young signal-caller Bramlett was referring to was wide out Khalif Ragin, who moved up to QB1 in Berglind’s absence and ran an offense his head coach described as “transported from the 70’s with three days of practice”. All he did was cap the first drive of the game for OSHS with a 3-yard keeper for a touchdown to make it 7-0 at the 5:36 mark of the opening period.

Greyhound linebacker Kyle Drawer then doubled that lead to 14-0 just two minutes later with an acrobatic 67-yard pick six as batted down a pass, caught it and rumbled all the way to pay dirt.

Armed with that same 14-0 advantage going into the second half, Ragin went back to work and found wide out Logan Carter on a 23-yard scoring strike to make it 21-0 at the 5:36 mark of the third period.

Down the stretch, Biloxi quarterback Jordan Ramsey hooked up twice with wide out Davie Griffin to complete the scoring. He found him from 25-yards out at the 8:59 mark and from 13-yards out with 4:05 left to play.
