Prep Football: Moss Point earns first win of the year with 34-29 decision over Vancleave

VANCLEAVE — Former Moss Point standout quarterback Kevin Fant faced his alma mater for the sixth time as an opposing head coach Friday night.
The latest meeting might just be the toughest to swallow for Fant, though.
Fant, in his eighth season as the head coach at Vancleave, watched as the win-less Tigers came to town and stunned his Bulldogs 34-29 in this renewal of that Jackson County rivalry. Moss Point is 1-4, and VHS is 2-3.

Moss Point would make good on its first drive of the night as Tiger quarterback Aiden Evans found wide out Jordan McInnis for an 11-yard touchdown pass at the 7:05 mark in the first quarter. 
Vancleave responded with an 8-yard scoring run by quarterback Layne Danner to tie things up at 7-7.
Then, late in the second period, Moss Point freshman linebacker Kaden Raston would find himself at the right place at the right time as he hauled in a deflected pass and ran 26-yards for a touchdown to go up 14-7.
Vancleave returned serve with 51 seconds before halftime on a 2-yard Reece Thomason quarterback sneak to tie it back up at 14-14 at halftime.

The only scoring in the third quarter came on a short run by Moss Point’s Landon Cato,to put his Tigers up 20-14 heading into the final period.
A 28-yard field goal by Vancleave’s Joseph Castro with 9:45 to go in the game cut the deficit to 20-17.
But the Tigers bounced right back. Barely over a minute later Moss Point would pull ahead 28-17 on a 14-yard scoring strike from Evans to Jaxon Dubose and Evans added the two-point conversion.
The two teams then traded scores down the stretch. Thomason hit Brayden Haarala on a 4-yard scoring toss, and Thomason also found Draeden Dronet on a 2 yard touchdown pass. 
Sandwhiched in between, Moss Point countered as running back Amarion Scott dashed 34-yards for a score.
Moss Point would gain 274 yards of offense on the night with Vancleave totaling 138 yards of offense.
