With yet another prep football season in full swing across South Mississippi last week, it’s time for next second installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.

“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week before we move on to the next week.

Here are seven things we noticed in the “Southern 6” Friday night:

1. County Champs — It was an historic night for the Poplarville High football team Friday night. The Hornets took the Pearl River County championship with a resounding 42-15 win over perennial state power Picayune here at Lee-Triplett Stadium. With the win, Poplarville remains unbeaten at 5-0 on the year, and the Maroon Tide drops to 2-3 overall. It marked just the fourth win ever for the Hornets over Picayune. Also, it was the first win in Picayune for Poplarville in 51 years. Also, it marked the first time as well since that 1975 season that Poplarville beat both Picayne and county rival Pearl River Central in the same season. Poplarville never trailed in the big win. The tailback tandem of standout senior Dandy Dozen Ty Keys and speedy sophomore Kaden Bradford combined for almost 400 yards rushing and six scores in the game.
2. Bounce Back — Gulfport got off to a fast start for homecoming, scoring on their first three possessions while holding Pascagoula scoreless until late in the first half on their way to a 41-7 win over the Panthers (2-3) on Friday. Gulfport, the defending lass 7A state champ, was coming off an overtime road loss on the road last week to Petal that snapped its program record 13 game win streak. Gulfport quarterback Jackson Wolverton threw for 248 yards and running back Amijai Frederick ran for two touchdowns in the win.
3. Times 10 — Ten is a magic number. At least it is for Ocean Springs when playing Biloxi in football. The visiting Greyhounds held on for a 21-14 win over the Indians here at the Biloxi High School Sports Complex Friday night in the Region 4-7A opener for both squads. The victory was the 10th straight for OSHS in this annual affair, which dates back over 100 years. That current streak is the longest for either side in the all-time series. The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 14-0 halftime lead they would never relinquish, and then extended it out to 21-0 mid-way through the third frame while holding BHS scoreless until the fourth quarter. In doing so, OSHS moved to 2-3 overall while the Indians lost their fourth straight game and are now 1-4. Ocean Springs was also missing three starters, including starting quarterback Chalmers Berglind, because of injuries.
4. Tiger Tales — Former Moss Point standout quarterback Kevin Fant faced his alma mater for the sixth time as an opposing head coach Friday night. The latest meeting might just be the toughest to swallow for Fant, though. Fant, in his eighth season as the head coach at Vancleave, watched as the win-less Tigers came to town and stunned his Bulldogs 34-29 in this renewal of that Jackson County rivalry. Moss Point is 1-4, and VHS is 2-3. Tiger first-year quarterback Aiden Evans threw for two touchdowns, one each to Jaxon Dubose and Jordan McInnis. Landon Cato not only ran for one score, but recorded 14 total tackles on defense to lead the way for MPHS as well.
5. New Surroundings — Stone High looked right at home in its new digs, making a splashy debut at its brand-new stadium on the school’s new campus off US 49. The Tomcats raced out to a 24-0 halftime lead, and weathered a second-half comeback on the part of George County to defeat the Rebels 34-21 Friday night at Tomcat Field. Coming off a bye week, Stone improved to 2-2 overall, while George County heads into its bye week at 2-3. Tomcat tailback Amarion Fairley ran for 146 yards and three touchdowns while his running mate Ayden Green chipped in with 119 yards and one score.
6. Paris Rules — To no one’s surprise, it was once again the Paris Trivillion show at Shirley Stadium Friday night. The Pass Christian senior standout signal-caller accounted for five touchdowns and over 360 yards of total offense in leading his Pirates to a 42-28 road win over East Central. Pass Christian remained unbeaten on the season at 5-0, while the home-standing hornets drop to 1-4. Trivillion waas 13-of-25 through the air, for 220 yards and three scores.He hooked up with brandon Laneaux twice and Marion burks once on the touchdown passes. Burks led PCHS in receptions with five for 107 yards. Meanwhile, on the ground, Trivillion carried the ball eight times for 141 yards and two touchdowns, including a 44-yard run. Pirates running back Douglas White, who added 73 yards rushing, also scored a touchdown.
7. Two Times — Both D’Iberville and St. Martin opened Region 4-7A play in fine fashion Friday night. The home-standing Warriors remained unbeaten at 5-0 overall by bashing Harrison Central 42-7. D’Iberville super senior standout signal-caller Jordan Walley, a Minnesota commit, completed 11 of 14 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Harrison Central. He also ran for 46 yards and another score, and he added three tackles and two interceptions on defense. Meanwhile, in Gulfport, St. Martin out-gunned home-standing West Harrison 45-28 as the YellowJackets also remained unbeaten at 5-0. St. Martin stalwart sophomore quarterback Dawsen Sullivan threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores in the winning effort. His twin brother Dawsey Sullivan was on the receiving end of two touchdown passes for the Yellow Jackets. And SMHS running back Seth Crockett ran for one touchdown and caught another. Defensively, Liam Walters paced the Yellow Jackets defense with 13 total tackles.
