POPLARVILLE — The yearly battle for supremacy in the largest classification in South Mississippi between Gulfport and Ocean Springs is this week’s “Smith Group Realty Homefield Advantage” Game of the Week for SouthMiss6 Sports.

Each week during the prep football season, SouthMiss6 Sports will feature a “GOTW” sponsored by The Smith Group Realty, your “Homefield Advantage” for buying and selling real estate in South Mississippi.

Excluding the Covid affected season of 2020, either the Greyhounds or Admirals have won either the Region 4-6A or the Region 4-7A title for each of the past eight full seasons.

Last season, Gulfport made its first major statement that it was on its way to an historic campaign when the Admirals sailed into Greyhound Stadium and stopped a program record 25-game region win streak for OSHS with a stunning 41-28 road win.

Gulfport would go on to win the Class 7A state championship.

The Admirals come into this week at 3-1 overall, while OSHS is just 2-3 overall but head coach Jake Bramlett’s crew is already 1-0 in the region race after a 21-14 win on the road in Biloxi last week.

“We talked about going 1-0,” Bramlett said. “Nothing mattered before region play began. Everything started over.”

The Greyhounds are now 16-1 in league play under Bramlett, who replaced current Gulfport head coach Blake Pennock at the helm of the Greyhounds when Pennock took the GHS job after three extremely successful seasons at OSHS.

This is the league-opener for the Admirals, who also stopped a five game losing streak to OSHS last year with that big win. Gulfport leads the all-time series 22-12, but the series is dead even at 6-6 over the past 12 games since 2014.
