With yet another prep football season in full swing across South Mississippi last week, it’s time for next installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.

“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week before we move on to the next week.

Here are seven things we noticed in the “Southern 6” Friday night:

  1. Sail On — The first trip for Ocean Springs to Gulfport’s new on-campus stadium was one to forget for the Greyhounds. The defending Class 7A state champion Admirals roughed up Ocean Springs all night long in taking a 42-3 decision in Region 4-7A play Thursday night. The win moves GHS to 4-1 overall in its league-opener, while the Greyhounds fall to 2-4 overall and are 1-1 in the region race. Gulfport took advantage of several OSHS turnovers in a commanding first half performance to jump out to a 21-0 lead an never look back. Admirals running back Jo Jo Thomas, a Biloxi transfer, ran for three touchdowns through the first three frames and the home team never trailed. It marked the eighth straight region win dating back to the 2024 season for Gulfport, which has also won 15-out-of its last 16 games overall. Ocean Springs has lost two region games in its past 32 contests, both coming to Gulfport.
  2. Rarefield Air — St.Martin sophomore stalwart signal-caller Dawsen Sullivan ran for four touchdowns and passed for a fifth touchdown and converted a 2-point play on a botched kick attempt as the Yellow Jackets easily brushed aside Biloxi Thursday night 50-38. The win marks the first ever 6-0 start for the Yellow Jackets, who are now 2-0 in Region-4-7A play. The game against Biloxi (1-5, 0-2) was not as close as the score seemed, as St. Martin led 50-17 with 4:41 left to play. Sullivan, who was 18-of-22 for 234 yards passing and ran the ball 21 times for 154 yards, accounting for 388 total yards from scrimmage, went over the 1,000 yard passing mark in the first quarter for the season.
  3. Are You Kidding Me? — In almost unbelievable fashion, Poplarville not only moved to 6-0 for just the fourth time in the past 70 years Thursday night but also avenged a loss from last year as well. The home-standing Hornets overcame a 34-7 second half deficit to pull out a thrilling 49-48 win in overtime against McComb in the Region 7-4A opener for both teams. Poplarville senior standout running back and Dandy Dozen product Ty Keys, a University of Miami commit, ran for almost 400 yards and five touchdowns, including the game-winning score with a 7-yard scamper in the extra session. Keys also notched the final touchdown of regulation on a 36-yard touchdown dash with just under three minutes to play on a 4th-and-4 situation to knot things up. Hornet senior place-kicker Jackson Schultz was perfect on all seven extra point attempts, including the game-tying one late in regulation as well as the game-deciding one in overtime.
  4. Pole Position — The Pass High Pirates (6-0) scored on each of their first six possessions to hold off Greene County (4-2) 38-14 in the Region 8-4A opener for both teams Thursday night. Pass senior standout quarterback Paris Trivillion showed why he is one of the top quarterback prospects in the South with pinpoint accuracy on his passes and quick feet as he led the Pirates’ scoring both ways. Trivillion completed 10 of his 12 pass attempts for 185 yards and a touchdown. The senior also ran for 164 yards and two scores and intercepted a pass on defense.
  5. Warriors Wound — D’Iberville is facing the same exact schedule on the football field this season that the Warriors encountered last year. And, for the second consecutive campaign, head coach Josh Ladner’s crew is off to a perfect 6-0 start. D’iberville thumped visiting West Harrison 45-7 in Region 4-7A play Thursday night. The Warriors not only are 6-0 overall, but are off to a solid 2-0 start in league play as well. D’Iberville senior standout quarterback Jordan Walley, a University of Minnesota commit, accounted for four of the six DHS touchdowns on the night. Walley threw for two touchdowns while going 12-of-17 for 207 yards, and he also ran for two more scores on 10 carries.
  6. Eagles Nest — Resurrection took a significant step in making the playoffs Friday night using a power running game to slip past Richton 14-6 Friday night in the Region 8-1A opener for both teams. The Eagles picked the perfect time for their first win of the season, as it was also Homecoming for the Eagles here at War Memorial Stadium. Eagles running back Dominic Sanders powered the win with 100 yards on 30 carries and one score. RCS have missed the state playoffs the past two seasons.
  7. Tigers Tumble — Moss Point, coming off its first win of the season, had a chance to win two games in a row for the first time in four years as Forrest County AHS paid a visit to Dantzler St., Thurday night. After all, the Aggies came in at just 2-3 overall. But FCAHS took a 26-14 win in the Region 8-4A opener for both teams. The Tigers are now 1-5 overall and have lost 11 of their past 12 games.
