OCEAN SPRINGS — While St. Martin hosts Gulfport in one battle for the early lead in the Region 4-7A race Thursday night, yet another key encounter in the league is taking place just down the road in west Jackson County.

D’Iberville, which sits atop the loop with a 2-0 mark so far along with the Yellow Jackets, heads to Ocean Springs for a contest with just as many state playoff implications. In fact, early indications are that these four teams, in al likelihood, will be the quartet to represent the region come Class 7A South State playoff time next month, with only the seeding left to be decided.

The Greyhounds and Warriors meet for the 45th time on the gridiron this week. Ocean Springs has won five straight over DHS, after stopping a five game Warriors’ winning streak in the series in 2021. You couldn’t get much more even than this series over the past decade with OSHS now up 7-5 over the past 12 meetings.

The Warriors and St. Martin stand alone currently atop the region race at 2-0 after a DHS win over West Harrison last week and Harrison Central to open league play the week before.

Meanwhile, after winning four straight league titles from 20210-2024. Ocean Springs got thumped on the road in Gulfport last week 42-3. Those Admirals also snapped the program record 25-game region win streak for the Greyhounds last year, as Gulfport captured its first region title in six seasons and first since winning three straight from 2017-2019.

The top four teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the state playoffs.

Elsewhere in the region race this week, West Harrison hosts Harrison Central in a battle between two of the three teams that sit win-less at 0-2 and. 0-1, respectively, so far in the league standings.

Biloxi is off this week. The Indians are also 0-2, after losses to both OSHS at home and St. Martin on the road last week.
