MOSS POINT — The Moss Point Lady Tigers did something Tuesday night that they haven’t done much in the past decade.

And that was open the season with a win.

Moss Point led throughout the game before nipping visiting St. Martin 31-30 in the season-opener for both teams.

It marked just the second time since MPHS head coach Ethan Porter took over the helm of the Lady Tigers nine years ago that his squad opened a new campaign with a win.

“It’s always great to start the season with a win. Since I’ve been the head coach this is only the second time we’ve started out 1-0. We try to play a tough schedule early to prepare us for district play. I wasn’t proud of how we won, but a lot of credit goes to st. Martin. They played really hard, and the coaching staff did a good job. We’re glad we won, but we definitely saw a lot of areas that we need to improve in.

The decision spoiled the debut of new St. Martin head coach Darryl Warrick, who took over for Jason Kennedy, who left for D’Iberville but is now the head coach at Oxford High.

After leading just 6-4 after the first frame, the home team got a 3-pointer apiece from Trinity Magee, Landyn Miller and Kahlil Davenport as the second stanza unfolded to take an 18-13 lead into halftime.

St. Martin stayed within striking distance though, thanks in part to a trey by Annie Weems in the second quarter

Magee chipped in six points in the third frame to keep MPHS ahead 29-24, despite five points, including a trey and a field goal from St. Martin’s Jaz Davis.

Neither team did much to separate themselves from the other down the stretch, as the Lady Tigers held on for the win.

Magee paced MPHS with 15 points in the win, and Miller added nine points and Davenport seven points.

Both Jalesha Hanford and Josie Hall had six points apiece for St. Martin.

Moss Point returns to action Saturday at the Steve Hampton Classic in Quitman.
