PICAYUNE — Picayune’s versatile standout Edgar Cruz is the “Southern Six Senior Spotlight” sponsored by Burnham Drugs this week.

Each week of the school year, we here at SouthMiss6 Sports along with Burnham Drugs will highlight a deserving student/athlete in the “Southern Six”.

Cruz has been a key contributor for perennial state power Picayune in various ways over the past four seasons as the Maroon Tide has rung up six straight region titles along the way.

For the past four seasons, Cruz has become one of the top place-kickers in South Mississippi. This season alone, he has connected on 32-of-33 extra point attempts as well as four-out-of-six field goals.

Last year, he nailed 58-of-62 point after conversions and also finished with four field goals.

In addition to his prowess with his foot, the powerful 6-foot, 235-pound Cruz has started up front on the offensive line for Picayune and helped pave the way for one of the most explosive offesive running games in the state.

Earlier this year, he transitioned out to tight end after spending last season and the first part of this year inside at tackle. Cruz and his Maroon Tide teammates open the Class 6A South State playoffs Friday might hosting Picayune.
